This animal cookie is a well known children’s snack. Here, the mother’s cookie packaged four cookies, not this buffalo cookie. Here, Walter Robinson has created a regional Southwest edition of the mother’s cookie. Buffalo is a loaded image–unlike the candy-coated depiction here, the buffalo’s history is not so sweet. When white people arrived in the Southwest, they exterminated the buffalo en masse as part of their attempt to eradicate the Native American population. The white buffalo, in this case, represents the sacred animal of the Native American culture.
