Nadya Tolokonnikova is known internationally as the founder of the Russian feminist activist group Pussy Riot. She has instigated some of the most significant actions of social justice against Russian tyranny, including Pussy Riot’s Punk Prayer in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. Tolokonnikova was subsequently imprisoned in Siberia for 21 months, and she continues to make artworks and actions that condemn totalitarianism. Her new series, titled Dark Matter, premiers in 2024 at The Dallas Art Fair, American Folk Art Museum, and her first European museum exhibiton in Austria. These works are based on Tolokonnikova’s own photographs, calligraphy, and experiences surrounding her activism and its impact upon her own life. The art historical and political significance of these works is profound.
