Hung Liu created a series of shaped canvas paintings in the early 1990s, shortly after her arrival in the United States from China. She based these paintings on photographic images of Chinese people, typically in a mode of work. The Metropolitan Museum of Art collected one such shaped canvas, a self portrait of Liu titled Daughter of the Revolution. The Kemper Art Museum holds another shaped canvas in its permanent collection, as does SFMoMA and other institutions.
