Po’pay was one of the heroes of the 1680 Pueblo Revolt. Originally from Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, Po’pay had been imprisoned along with several other important members of pueblo religious ceremony. Upon his release, he devised a plan to banish the Spanish from the area, and was successful in doing so for 12 years.
